Tour Pricing

Restored in 1992 to its original glory, the Whalehead is open for tours. Inside, you’ll see Mrs. Knight’s Steinway piano and petite Art Nouveau “grandmother” clock, as well as many elite-at-the-time amenities including original Tiffany glass sconces, corduroy walls, cork flooring, Otis elevator and a a cast-iron safe within an ornate, marble-topped sideboard. Please note, there are no refunds on specialty guided tours.

Candlelight Tours

The Whalehead Christmas Candlelight Tour dates are Nov. 26th, 27th, December 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th.  The cost of the tour is $20 and the start time is 5:00.  Due to the popularity of this tour, advanced reservations are required.  Please call 252-453-9040 to reserve your spot.  Tours are non-refundable. Masks are recommended for tour participants.

Legends, Lore and Ghost Tours

Legends, Lore and Ghost Tours are held Wednesdays at 7 pm. Dates for the Tours are June 16th, 30th, July 7, 14, 21, 28, August 4, 11, 18, and 25. The cost is $15.00 per person and there are no refunds. Space is limited and advance reservations are recommended. Tours are complete in about an hour and are not recommended for children under 10.
The tentative 2021 start date for Ghost Tours is June 16, pending the NC Governor’s implementation of his Phase 3 restrictions. Please call for firm information or to make reservations for later in the summer.

Behind the Scenes Tour  

The Behind the Scenes Tours have been cancelled for the 2021 season.

Schedule your Behind the Scenes Tour to learn about how Whalehead was built, the people who lived and worked here and see some of the areas not on our regular tour – the third floor, attic and the Boathouse.  The tour is approximately 90 minutes and appropriate for ages 10 and up. Advance reservations are necessary as space is limited.  Cost is $20 per person and is not refundable. Call 252 453 9040 to make your reservation.

The Joan’s Way Tour

The Joan’s Way Tours have been cancelled for the 2021 season. 
Whalehead Kid’s Day also features a special children’s tour of Whalehead, the “Joan’s Way Tour”. The Joan’s Way Tour will run June 25th – August 13th, 3PM – 4PM, cost is $5.00. This tour is limited to 30 spaces. Please reserve your spot in advance. “Joan’s Way” is named for the daughter of the Whalehead owner’s valet, Mr. Starkey. “Joan” takes children on a tour of the mansion describing what life was like when she was a child there in the 1920s. At the end of the tour, children will make a keepsake to take home. This tour is appropriate for ages 6 – 12. Please call 252-453-9040 to make your reservation.
