Your 2022 Bucket List

March 29, 2022

The Wild Mustangs, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, and our beautiful beaches top most to-do lists among visitors to Corolla and the Currituck Outer Banks. They are just a few reasons why Southern Living listed Corolla among the Top 10 Best Family Getaways in the South. You may have stayed here in a beautiful vacation home years ago, or maybe you’re planning your first trip here. Either way, there is always something new to experience here.

If you weren’t able to visit us last year but plan to come up this summer, check out these recommendations for an extra special vacation.

Get Nautical! The Currituck Maritime Museum opened last summer in Historic Corolla and has become a favorite attraction. Admission is free to explore this huge self-interpretive and family-friendly exhibit experience. With many amazing exhibits and artifacts, the new museum is a monument to our region’s nautical history.

Celebrate a Century! 2022 not only marks the 100th anniversary of Whalehead’s groundbreaking, but the 100th wedding anniversary of the mansion’s original owners, the Knights. Tour this beautifully restored landmark, and watch our summer events calendar for the weekly Cork and Craft and Yoga in the Park events held on Whalehead’s lawn.

Get Back to Nature! You’ve packed your flip-flops, but what about your hiking shoes? Currituck County is home to multiple nature trails at Pine Island Audubon Sanctuary and the Currituck Banks National Estuarine Reserve. Enjoy a walk through these serene maritime forests and bring your camera to capture the wildlife.

Cool Off! H2OBX Waterpark is one of the top attractions on the Currituck mainland and reopens for the season on May 28. Single-day tickets and season passes are available for a summer of water-based rides and family-friendly amenities.

Paddle On! The Currituck Sound is a favorite spot for kayaking, paddle boarding, and sailing. Book a sunset kayak tour with Coastal Explorations or Kitty Hawk Kites, or bring your own and put in at the boat ramp at Historic Corolla. The sound area is gorgeous and offers spectacular views and opportunities for bird watching.

Search for Treasure! If you’re an early riser, try your luck during low tide to see if any sea glass has washed ashore. It’s not as prevalent as in the past, but if you’re lucky you might come across a fragment of glass made smooth and frosted by the churning waves.

Explore our History! The recently established African-American Experience of Northeast North Carolina features over thirty monuments to Black history, including the Historic Jarvisburg Colored School and Capt. Benjamin J. Bowser gravesite in Jarvisburg. This self-guided tour reveals fascinating facts about our region.
