Friday Five: Top Five Snacks for Your Beach Vacation

April 13, 2012
One of our co-workers told us this story about how her mother’s family would go to Jones Beach in New York many years ago. Her mother’s parents always brought a spaghetti pot and would actually light a small fire on the beach to boil water for pasta! Of course, this was 60 years ago, and times have definitely changed. When you come to the Currituck Outer Banks for your beach vacation, the last thing you want to pack is your good Calphalon cookware. Thankfully, good snacks aren’t difficult to find after a day of play.

You will definitely work up an appetite while surfing, playing beach volleyball, and building sandcastles, too. If you’re looking for delicious snacks to keep up your energy, there are places you can shop in Corolla and throughout Currituck. Stash some of the good stuff in your beach bag for you and the kids – here are a few suggestions:

Nuts! Some types of nuts are known to contain nutrients to help heart health, and help lower cholesterol. They taste great, too, and if you stop by any of the three Try My Nuts shops in the OBX you can stock up and snack. Check out their selection of hot sauces and BBQ rubs while you’re there, too.

Apples! Crunchy, sweet, and good for you, an apple fills you up and keeps you going during the day. If you know it’s going to be a while before you sit down to a meal, toss an apple or two in your bag. You may want to contact Martin Vineyards while you’re in town and see if their apple orchards are open for picking.

Peaches! Juicy peaches are plentiful in North Carolina, and before you head to the beach you may want to stop at Powell’s Market and see what’s available. If you’ve rented a beach home for your stay, you may find some inspirations for dinner, too.

Cheese! When you’re relaxing on the balcony before a grand sunset, why not enjoy a snack of cheese and crackers with a glass of wine? Bacchus Wine and Cheese has everything you need to enhance a cozy evening.

Ice Cream! C’mon, what’s the beach without a trip to the local ice cream shop? Put in a cup or a cone, leave it plain or top it with fudge and sprinkles…there’s no wrong way to enjoy ice cream. Here are a few places to try when the sun has become too much to handle.

Sweet, salty, crunchy, delicious…find the perfect snack to enjoy, and don’t worry about calories. There’s so much to do here, you’ll definitely work them off.
