Corolla Wild Horses

Until recent years, the Outer Banks of North Carolina were considered some of the most isolated and under-developed areas in the country. The Corolla Wild Horses are believed to have roamed over the past four centuries on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. These horses are descendants of Spanish Mustangs brought here by early explorers.  In 2010 the North Carolina General Assembly designated the Colonial Spanish Mustang as the official state horse.

In 1995, North Carolina State Secretary of the Department of Cultural Resources, Betty McCain, signed a proclamation stating that Corolla's Wild Horses are one of North Carolina's most significant historic and cultural resources of the coastal area.

If you would like to see these amazing animals, you can visit them in the four-wheel-drive area. There are several tour companies in Corolla that can take you. These companies are very knowledgeable of the horses and the history of the area.

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund was formed in 1989 to heighten awareness of the wild horses’ presence in the area. Anyone interested in adopting a wild horse, making a donation to the Fund, or would like more information can contact the Fund at 252-453-8002 or go to their website.

*Please note that is illegal to intentionally come within 50 feet of the horses.

Guided Horse Tours
One way to see the famous Corolla Wild Horses is on a guided off-road tour. Off road tours allow visitors to see parts of the coastal area of North Carolina that otherwise might not be found. Natural preserves are home to North Carolina's enchanting wildlife - graceful, long-necked birds, colorful sea creatures, and of course - the wild horses that roamed in herds along the shores. In season, these tours book fast so be sure to make a reservation early!

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund is now offering the "Trip of a Lifetime."  Don't miss your opportunity to locate and observe the horses with the herd manager.

Corolla Wild Horse Museum

Built in the early 1900's, this historic landmark was the first unified Corolla school created by the Currituck County School system and was open through the late 1950's.

The schoolhouse has since been restored by Twiddy & Company Realtors and currently houses: the Corolla Wild Horse Fund offices, a free interactive wild horse museum, a retail shop, and original art by national equinc artist Robin Caspari.

Located in the heart of the Historic Village the Corolla School House and Corolla Wild Horse Museum offer fun educational activities for children in the summer. There is no admission fee for the museum and nominal fees for children's programs.
