Locals and tourists alike made their way to the tip top of the Outer Banks for the Surfside Scute 5K in Corolla last Saturday. The weather was beautiful as runners (some in bare feet) raced along beach side roads and even huffed it onto the beach for a rigorous sand portion! Those 10 and under joined the Tiny Turtle Kids’ Fun Run, where the little guys proved that turtles are not at all slow! The race was a fundraiser for Corolla Ocean Rescue and all proceeds went to support their lifeguard service and public ocean safety programs. As a “green” race, the event had on-site recycling, re-usable water bottles for all the Tiny Turtles, and grocery tote bags for all participants. Also, used athletic athletic shoes were collected for One World Running, an organization that recycles or re-furbishes footwear for people in need. Many faces were decorated with the classic lifeguard sun-protection, Zinka, resulting in a very colorful and sun-safe crowd. Prizes were awarded to the top three overall finishers, the top finisher in each age group, and for the “Craziest Zinka Face”. Post-race celebrations in front of the Corolla Surf Shop included refreshments, live music, and fun all around. Pictures are posted on the Corolla Ocean Rescue Facebook page and the COR website at
