Currituck County Marriage License Information


The cost of a marriage license is $60. Any ordained minister with a church can perform a marriage ceremony. The officiate does not need a special license to perform a ceremony in North Carolina. Magistrates can also perform marriage ceremonies. You can reach a Currituck County magistrate by calling 252-232-3404.

The Register of Deeds Office

Marriage licenses can be obtained at the Register of Deeds office on the mainland: Currituck Judicial Center, 2801 Caratoke Hwy., Suite 300, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Marriage licenses will not be issued after 4 p.m. For details on obtaining a marriage license, call 252-232-3297. Marriage licenses may also be obtained in any county in North Carolina. A marriage license is valid from the time it is issued and remains valid for sixty (60) days.


Waiting Period

There is no waiting period before or after obtaining a marriage license.


Physicals

Physical examinations are no longer required for marriage.


Requirements To Obtain A Marriage License


If you are 21 years of age or over:

• Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds office.
• Both parties must present a valid government picture ID card (driver's license, passport, etc.) that includes date of birth information.
• A valid Social Security Number is required or an affidavit which indicates that you are not eligible for a Social Security Number.

If you are between the ages of 18 and 20 years:
• Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds office.
• Both parties must present a certified birth certificate.
• Both parties must present a valid government picture ID card (driver's license, passport, etc.) that includes date of birth information.
• A valid Social Security Number is required or an affidavit which indicates that you are not eligible for a Social Security Number.

If you are between the ages of 16-18 years:
• Both parties must personally appear at the Register of Deeds office.
• Both parties must present a certified birth certificate.
• Both parties must present a valid government picture ID card (driver's license, passport, etc.) that includes date of birth information.
• A parent or legal guardian must be present and show legal documentation to prove they are the parent or legal guardian. You may be required to produce a certified copy of court orders.
• A valid Social Security Number is required or an affidavit which indicates that you are not eligible for a Social Security Number.
