Currituck Outer Banks Brochure Guidelines

  1. Currituck County tourism-related businesses are permitted to place brochures* or other printed materials in the County’s visitor centers only after approval by the Director of Travel & Tourism or her designee. The requesting agency is to send one example of the brochure to: Currituck County Department of Travel & Tourism, Attn.: Director, P.O. Box 39, Currituck, NC 27929, or hand deliver it to a visitor’s center. Once approval is given, it is the responsibility of the requesting agency to print and send materials to the centers. The Travel & Tourism Department reserves the right to refuse brochures and materials that are deemed inappropriate or are not considered related to tourism. In addition, businesses may submit up to two (2) different brochures/materials at the centers (if space is available).
  2. All materials distributed through the visitor’s centers will be provided free of charge to visitors. The sale of materials at the center is prohibited with the exception of items sold by other tenants when sold through their offices. Additionally, no retail sales catalogs will be accepted for distribution at the visitor centers.
  3. Promotional materials from tourism-related businesses located in Currituck County – or ones that provide services to visitors within Currituck County – may be submitted for possible distribution through the visitor centers. Rack space priority will be given to businesses and agencies located in Currituck County. Brochures/materials accepted for display and distribution include the following:
  • Accommodations – hotels, motels, bed & breakfasts, inns, rental homes, rental cottages, and campgrounds
  • Attractions
  • Activities and recreation
  • Restaurants
  • Special events and festivals
  • Nearby historical and cultural attractions (e.g. Wright Brothers Monument, The Lost Colony, Jockey’s Ridge)
  • Visitor guides provided by the Currituck County Department of Travel & Tourism
  • Chamber Guides provided by the Currituck County Chamber of Commerce
  • Regional and area maps
  • Free newspapers that focus primarily on tourism and local attractions, events, etc.
  • Travel guides that promote local and regional attractions, activities and tourism-related businesses
  • State of NC travel publications
  • Any other materials determined to be acceptable by the Tourism Director
    4.  Visitor center staff will not recommend particular businesses/agencies, but will provide materials and advice
         to visitors without bias.
    5.  The visitor centers will not display or distribute literature that:
  • consists of non-tourist related information;
  • contains political propaganda or inappropriate content;
  • rates travel attractions, events and/or accommodations;
  • promotes time-shares or offers a gift or discount in exchange for attendance at a sales presentation;
  • promotes nudity, drunkenness or lewd behavior.
  • promotes the following: commercial or residential real estate companies that do not provide vacation rentals; automobile sales; construction companies; community newspapers; television stations; radio stations; adult entertainment; gas stations; convenience stores; grocery stores; and any other non tourism-related business.
The Director of Travel & Tourism (or her designee) reserves the right to refuse businesses that:
  • do not meet this policy;
  • are deemed inappropriate;
  • or are not considered related to tourism.

*All brochures should fit in the center’s brochures racks. Materials too large for the racks will be displayed/distributed at the discretion of the centers’ staff.
