RALEIGH, NC (June 9, 2013) — Raleigh-based travel writers and photographers Kathy M. Newbern and J.S. Fletcher, a husband-wife team, have earned $525 in prize money for six award-winning entries, including a “best overall,” in the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW) annual communications contest, Eastern Chapter. 

Newbern and Fletcher took home top prize in a new category, Best Overall Writing, for a series they produced on Examiner.com covering the Currituck Outer Banks featuring the wild horses that roam the beach at Corolla and points north, the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, Whalehead at Historic Corolla Village, and the Outer Banks Wildlife Education Center - all three are located in Currituck's Heritage Park.

Thirteen employees of Currituck County tourism businesses were honored recently at the Third Annual Hospitality Guest Service Excellence Awards. The program was organized through the county’s Travel and Tourism Department, and the awards were presented by members of the Currituck County Board of Commissioners, Currituck Tourism Director Diane Nordstrom, and the events’ keynote speaker, Lynn Minges, Assistant Secretary of Tourism, Marketing and Global Branding for the NC Department of Commerce.
Currituck County’s Department of Travel & Tourism was recognized recently by the Destination Marketing Association of North Carolina (DMANC) during the association’s annual awards ceremony. The department received one first-place award and two second-place awards for various marketing projects.
