Knott's Island is a little known treasure for visitors to the Currituck Outer Banks. To access the island, take a 45 minute ferry ride from the dock near the Historic Currituck Courthouse across the Currituck Sound. Among the must explore attractions on Knotts Island are the Mackey Island Wildlife Refuge and Martin's Vineyards. The Mackey Island Refuge is part of the Charles Kuralt Trail and has been recognized for supporting significant migratory waterfowl populations. Mackey Island is home to many species of wildlife including ducks, snow geese, shorebirds, mammals, reptiles, and amphibians and a pair of bald eagles. These animals use the refuge for a migratory habitat and for food, cover, and nesting.
Visitors to the Island also enjoy visiting Martin's Vineyards. Enjoy tastings of the locally made wines or spend the day picking fruit in season as they grow a variety of crops and fruit trees. There are a spattering of fruit stands along the way offering fresh produce, jams, jellies, and baked goods and a full-service market and deli. Before leaving, don't forget to stop by Pearl's Bay Marina, a waterfront restaurant offering spectacular views for dining and fresh, local fare at reasonable prices. It's the the perfect way to round out your day on Knott's Island. Enjoy camping or want to schedule a guided hunt?
