“Best Outfitters on Earth”
Kitty Hawk Kites was recently selected as one of the “Best Outfitters on Earth” by National Geographic Adventure magazine.
Kitty Hawk Kites has several locations throughout the Outer Banks, including three on the Currituck Outer Banks at Monterey Plaza, Ocean Trail and TimBuck II Shopping Center. The company also conducts hang gliding tours from the Currituck Regional Airport on Currituck County’s mainland.
Among the many adventure sports options available through Kitty Hawk Kites are hang gliding, kayaking, kite boarding, parasailing and jet skiing. Dolphin jet boat tours, aero tours and fishing tours are also available, along with a wide range of activities involving the company’s namesake, kites.
Kitty Hawk Kites was established in 1974, and has since expanded to include 17 locations. The company’s services also include extensive retail sales and outdoor equipment rental.
National Geographic Explorer bestowed the award upon Kitty Hawk Kites in October. Outfitter companies were judged in four categories: Education and Interpretation; Sustainable-Travel Practices; Quality of Services; and Spirit of Adventure. Customer surveys also helped determine the companies listed among the top 105 outfitters across the planet.

Currituck Beach Lighthouse
Climb the 214 steps to the top of the majestic, red brick lighthouse. First lit on December 1, 1875, the beacon filled the remaining "dark spot" on the North Carolina coast between Cape Henry and Bodie Island lighthouses. It is one of the only lighthouses in America that still houses its' original first-order Fresnel lens. The light continues to flash today at 20-second intervals, serving as a navigational aid. The beacon, which can be seen for 18 nautical miles, comes on at dusk and ceases at dawn. The Currituck Beach Lighthouse is a member of Currituck Heritage Park, Historic Corolla and the Historic Albemarle Tour. The admission cost to climb the lighthouse is $7.00 for anyone 8 years of age or older, youth 7 and under are admitted free of charge with an adult (cash and checks only). Children 12 and younger may climb only if accompanied by an adult. Parents or guardians must sign a waiver for unaccompanied climbers ages 13-18. During periods of high winds or extreme weather the outside gallery or the entire lighthouse tower may be closed to climbers.
